Based on travels to the lakes, this painting is a unique view from atop a mountain.
Located on the island of São Miguel, Portugal, the Lagao das Sete Cidades are nestled in an old volcanic crater. On a clear day, the two lakes are visibly different colors; they are the Lagoa Azul (blue lake) and Lagoa Verde (green lake). However, on the day the reference photo was taken, the sky was overcast and it was misty atop the mountain. This led the two lakes in the painting to be the same color.
